A student team in China just built an AI tool to help Northeast enterprises with cross-border compliance. Good news. But if you're trading with Russia, here's the line an AI tool won't cross for you.

Northeast China borders Russia. A big share of its outbound trade — grain, machinery, building materials — flows straight across that border. The opportunity is real. But Russia-facing trade carries a layer that Southeast Asia or Latin America deals don't: sanctions compliance.

An AI tool handles part of that job well:
· Screening counterparties, banks and shipping lines against sanctions lists in seconds.
· Drafting a usable first version of compliance clauses and due-diligence checklists.

Use it. It's fast and it doesn't get tired.

But three things it can't do — and I say this as someone who writes code and runs a self-built AI system for compliance screening, which is exactly why I know its limits:

  1. Ownership tracing. Your Russian counterparty may not be listed — but the person who actually controls it might be. The "50% rule" means you trace ownership layer by layer. AI can match a name; it won't conclude "this one is safe to touch."
  2. Secondary sanctions. Even a lawful shipment can pull you into scope if you settle in USD or if the chain touches a sanctioned entity. That's about your money route, not your goods.
  3. Accountability. If you sign based on an AI output and something goes wrong, the tool won't defend you or pay the fine. Deciding "do we take this deal" means someone has to stand behind that call.

Whether a specific transaction is clear depends on local counsel and the law in force — I'm pointing at direction, not verdict.

The tool flags the risk. Whether you act on it still needs someone to judge and to own the outcome. Those were never the same job.

Russia-facing deal you're unsure about? Send me the ownership structure and settlement route — I'll walk through it first.
